Qualifying Information:

USPC Quiz Rulebook Article 6 - Championships
1. Competitors qualify for Championships by competing in a qualifying Quiz.

Hs, H-As and As wishing to compete at Championships do not have to qualify at a Regional Quiz but must have permission of their RS.

2. Divisions:
Junior D:  D2 and D3, 10 - 12 years of age

Senior D: D2 and D3, 13 - 25 years of age

Junior C/B: 10 - 14 years of age

Senior C/B:  15 - 25 years of age

B to A:  teams of only two members, 14 - 25 years of age

NOTE: Quiz competitors MUST BE AT LEAST 10 YEARS OF AGE before JANUARY 1 to compete in the USPC Championships of that year.

3. Qualifications:
a) It is the responsibility of the Regional Supervisor to correctly place the Pony Club members by age and rating and to abide by the Team Membership Regulations.

b) All competitors must have qualified in a Qualifying Regional Quiz Rally within the 12 months preceding the Championships.

c) In order to qualify for Championships, all competitors must have obtained their D2 ratings prior to competing in their Regional Quiz Rally. Championship qualifiers who rate up between Regional Quiz Rally and Championships will compete at the level at which they qualified.

d) Qualifiers do not have to qualify together as a team.

e) Composition of Teams: Each Region may determine the criteria for qualification and selection of team members, i.e., all members of a first place team or the top 4 individuals, while still abiding by the age and rating regulations.

f) No Region shall select its Championships team solely on the individual score of a single Phase.

g) A Junior D who qualifies on a Senior D team has the option of competing on a Junior D team or a Senior D team.

h) A Junior C who qualifies on a Senior C team has the option of competing on a Junior C team or a Senior C team.

These decisions should be made in consultation with the Pony Club member, the DC, the RS, and the Quiz Committee as needed.

Middle California Region Qualifying Policy -- Qualifying for Championships

It is the Region's viewpoint that Qualifying Rallies are intended primarily to demonstrate that the horse and rider can perform safely at the Championship level and secondarily to rank riders' performance for the purpose of team selection.

Riders attempting to qualify for Championships must meet any and all minimum qualifications which have been established in the discipline's written rulebooks, as well as any additional qualifying standards established by the Region.

For Dressage, all qualifying riders are encouraged to perform a musical freestyle. Individual total score used for ranking qualifiers will be the sum of compulsory scores minus the written test and the Horse Management penalty score. Musical freestyle scores will be used in ranking qualification.

Riders attempting to qualify for Championships in a mounted discipline may not receive more than six (6) Horse Management penalty points (raw score) in a one-day rally and nine (9) Horse Management penalty points (raw score) in a two-day rally. If the limit is exceeded, the qualifier will be placed on the bottom of the list of qualifiers. If selected for a team, The Region and/or club will work with the qualifier to improve performance.

A Pony Club member who wishes to qualify for Championships as Stable Managers must sign the Letter of Intent as a Stable Manager candidate and indicate for which discipline they wish to qualify. In selecting teams, the Region will give top priority to qualifiers in the specific discipline, based on need; the teams total Horse Management score and the Chief Horse Management Judges assessment of the competitor's attitude and suitability. The final decision will be made by the Regional Supervisor. If no Stable Manager qualifies for a
specific discipline, the order of selection will be: 1) choose a qualifying Stable Manager from another discipline, 2) choose the next qualified rider from the specific discipline and 3) choose from Stable Managers who did not qualify.

Upon completion of a Qualifying Rally, the Regional Supervisor will publish a list of qualifiers in order of their ranking. All qualifiers will be notified of the list and will have a two-week period to accept or decline their team position (if the Qualifying Rally is held in the fall, the deadline for response will be January 1). If they decline their team position, their name will be placed on the bottom of the qualifiers' list. The next qualifier will be notified and be given a two-week opportunity to accept or decline the team position. For mounted disciplines with Stable Managers, the Regional Supervisor will also publish a qualifying Stable Managers' list following the policies for Stable Manager selection stated in the preceding paragraph. All qualifying Stable Managers will be notified. The top ranking Stable Manager qualifier will have a two-week period to accept or decline the team position, subject to the same exception for fall rallies noted above. If they decline the team position, their name shall go to the bottom of the list and the next qualifier will be notified and given a two-week opportunity to accept or decline the position. All qualifying team members will be required to attend any Regional meetings or Prep Camps, if offered. Only the Regional Supervisor can make exceptions. The Regional Supervisor reserves the right to not allow any rider, horse and rider combination, Stable Manager or unmounted competitor to compete at Championships if they are considered to be performing below acceptable levels or appears to be unsafe.
